About

Enormous blocks. Very small builders.

STEAM Stackers is a Chicago-area enrichment experience built around one very good idea: give young children blocks big enough to build something they can walk through.

Giant lightweight blocks stacked in a room

The blocks

Ten inches on every side, and light enough to carry

Our blocks are 10 by 10 by 10 inches—big enough that a wall built from them is taller than the children building it, and light enough that a four-year-old can carry one across the room.

That combination is the whole trick. Ordinary blocks make small things. These make rooms, towers, tunnels and forts—and they take a whole group working together to build.

An Activity Leader building with children

The people

Our Activity Leaders are the other half

A pile of blocks is fun. A pile of blocks with the right person running the room is an hour children remember.

Our Activity Leaders are science demonstrators, children’s improv teachers and creative play directors. Every one of them has real experience working creatively with children, and they’re eager to work with you to build something your group will talk about.

What children get out of it

It looks like play. It is play.

It also happens to build the skills their teachers are working on all year.

Problem solving

A wall that keeps falling over is a problem worth solving. So is a doorway that has to hold up a roof.

Pattern recognition

Children figure out how the blocks stack, stagger and balance—usually without anyone telling them.

Cooperation

Nothing big gets built alone. The best structures of the day are always the group’s.
